There’s a pretty interesting cast of characters at the Transitions Championship this week, including the once (and future?) number one Luke Donald (10/1), current Masters’ Champion Charl Schwartzel (14/1) and last weeks’s winner Justin Rose (16/1). The trend on tour this year seems to be that a player with a near miss on one week comes back to win the following. If that holds up, the man of the hour perhaps is Charl Schwartzel, who last week finished three back in a T4. Donald finished four back in a t6.
Either would be a fine choice.
Another trend this year is of American winners. Ten of twelve titles have gone to American players thus far. That suggests that this might be the week for the better Americans in the field—Webb Simpson (18/1), Matt Kuchar (20/1), or Nick Watney (22/1).
The PGA Tour's "Florida Swing" continues this week with the Transitions Championship at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club.Gary Woodland defends the title and a strong field has assembled.
This tournament began life in 2000 as the Tampa Bay Classic. It's also been known as the Chrysler Championship and the Pods Championship. Transitions, the lens maker, took over as title sponsor in 2009.
Designed by Larry Packard and opened in 1974, the Copperhead course at Innisbrook has played host to 13 PGA Tour events over the years. In 1999 the layout was revamped to bring it in line with the modern game. The redesign was completed just in time for the 1999 JCPenney Classic, an event won by John Dalyand Laura Davies.
Unusually for a West Coast Florida course, the track features some fairly significant changes in elevation - up to 80 feet. It has traditionally been one of the tougher courses visited by the PGA Tour. Although last season it played a little easier, ranked 27th of the 51 tracks visited on the circuit.
Last season long hitter Gary Woodland holed a clutch, 10-foot par putt on the final green to beat Webb Simpson by a single stroke.
Both men return this year to Innisbrook and an impressive field line up, including a number of European stars, will join them. Last week's winner Justin Rose is on the start sheet, so is World Number 2 Luke Donald, Scotland's Martin Laird and Sergio Garcia of Spain.

Tournament information:

This will be the 11th Transitions Championship, with the first one being played in 2000. The tournament was formally called the Tampa Bay Classic and then changed in 2003 to the Chrysler Championship. They dropped out in 2006 and PODS took over sponsorship and got a added boast with the advent of the FedEx Cup series and the transfer of the Players Championship to May. So in 2007, just six months after the close of the 2006 event the tournament moved into it's new March date. but that didn't last long as they were gone after the 2008 event. Unfortunely because of a change of management at PODS, they dropped out after the 2008 event. But the power of the PGA Tour shined through as Transitions Lens, an opitical lens manufacturing company, who's headquarters are in the Tampa Bay area came to the rescue with a four year deal and are in their second year as sponsor. The 2001 event wasn't played because of the 9/11 tragedy.
When the tournament first started in 2000, it was the first time that a full PGA Tour event was held in the area since the St. Petersburg Open, which was held between 1930 and 1964. The course was the home of the mix-event JCPenney Classic, which ended in 1999.

Course information:

The Copperhead course was designed by Larry Packard and opened in 1974. It was restored in 1999, two years after it was purchased by Westin Inc, The goal of the restoration project was to regain the shot values and still challenge today's longer-hitting PGA Tour players when Innisbrook hosts PGA Tour events. The plan involved refurbishing all 18 greens, restructuring many of the bunkers, removing some trees around the greens to improve air movement and sunlight, and clearing out undergrowth between fairways. The length of the golf course is the most visible change from 7,087 to 7,230 yards by the addition of tournament tees on five holes. A reported $500,000 was spent and the course re-opened just in time for the 1999 JCPenney Classic.
Venue: Innisbrook Resort, Copperhead, Palm Harbor, Florida
Date: Mar 15-18
Course stats: par 71, 7,340 yards
Purse: $5,500,000 Winner: $990,000
Defending Champion: Gary Woodland (-15)

Friday 16 - Live on Sky Sports 3 from 7pm
Saturday 17 - Live on Sky Sports 1 from 5pm
Sunday 18 - Live on Sky Sports 3 from 5pm

Player Watch:
Webb Simpson - Last year's runner-up has become one of the world's best players since the last hosting of this tournament. He played well last week in the Cadillac despite a disappointing final round.

Ryo Ishikawa - Came close to securing his first PGA Tour victory in last week's Puerto Rico Open where he displayed his skill around the greens. He had fewer putts than anyone in that event.

Luke Donald - Showed he might be coming back to his best with a tied sixth in the Cadillac. This course should suit his style of play, he was tied sixth in his last start in this event two years ago.

Key Hole: 16th. This 460 yard par-4 ranked as the toughest hole on the course in the 2011 competition. Water is a factor all down the right hand side.

Skills required: Despite Gary Woodland's power from the tee. It's not long driving that tends to win the day at Innisbrook. Far more important is the putter - Woodland holed every putt he faced from inside 20 feet during the final round last year.
